Save Our Youth Theatre

The impact of Covid 19 is being felt across the theatre industry and Stage2, as a small charity committed to the empowerment of young people through active involvement in an award-winning youth theatre, needs your help.

What’s at stake?

Stage2 is one of Birmingham’s oldest Youth Theatre’s, since we opened in 1988 we have been offering performance opportunities in major city-centre venues and international festivals, for young people across the West Midlands.

We are one of the only open-access, intergrated youth theatre’s in the country, with a designated subsidy fund to support families from financially challenged backgrounds – we have never turned a young person away and even give our current circumstance don’t intend to start any time soon. As a registered charity, we are committed to the welfare and betterment of the experiences of young people, including world-class Qualification tuition (100% Pass Rate), Drama School Audition support, Technical and Backstage Training and more.

Stage2 Staff and members of our Board of Trustees are working hard on applying for funding as well as furloughing our core staff in a three week on, one week off period (see our Blog for more information on this!). However, even with these measures the financial security of our important, valued charity is still uncertain…

What can I do?

We recognise that though many people are saying so at the moment;  we are not all in the same boat.

For many, this lockdown represents financial insecurity, isolation, increasing family tension and a whole host of other problems we may never have considered in any other circumstance. That’s why, we’re not solely asking for financial support.

If you would like to help, then please consider doing so in the following ways that best suits you:

Donate Expenditure

Due to the lockdown, many families are being forced to work from home, decreasing their outgoings for petrol or their commute. If you are in this position, why not consider donating a week’s worth of petrol money or bus/train fare to Stage2?

Set up a Regular Donation

If you’re in a position to give consistently – a donation as small as £5 a month goes a long way

Show your support on Social Media

A share and a like on any of our posts increases our likelihoods of reaching more people both during lockdown and

after the lockdown has finished.

Work Experience

Open Access

Productions, Performances & Projects

Stage2 has been putting young people on-stage for nearly 30 years. We offer performance opportunities throughout the year in city-centre venues – alongside informal, varied Saturday workshops for young people to develop skills & confidences.

Our productions vary from classic texts to contemporary & devised pieces, as well as festival-style performance ventures where the young people of Stage2 take the helm. We’ve even worked on a World Premiere or two! The best part about it is that anyone can get involved without an audition and our shows consistently reach critical acclaim from audiences and press alike!

Work Experience & Leadership

Stage2 is a charity that is dedicated to the welfare, education and development of young people. We believe that every young person should have access to the Arts and all of the valuable skills and experiences there-in.

Whether it’s DofE voluntary work, school placement time, or gaining practical experience leading groups, Stage2 provides individually tailored tuition in professional environments.

Backstage & Offstage Skills

Stage2 isn’t just for performers! We provide extensive training in all aspects of the Theatre and are one of the only youth groups that actively allows our young members to operate on-their-own in theatres!

Places for this are extremely limited and require you to have at least a term’s worth of attendance under your belt before you can apply. Why not email us for more information?

General Drama

General Drama is an informal workshop in the morning for members who can’t commit to a show or are interested in getting to know people, learning varied skills and playing. Each Term has a different focus (Physical Theatre/Creative Writing etc.) with each week being tailored around a specific skill. It’s a friendly group that is tailored around having fun as much as it is around education and exploration!

Stage 1

Stage1 is our group for anyone currently in Primary School.

This is a friendly group, where members mix, learn and have lots of fun in a secure environment with other enthusiastic and willing members. Members participate in fun games, drama exercises and creative play every Saturday afternoon! Each term has a specific theme which gives all the exercises and games they play a common purpose to ensure that they can inter-relate what they are learning.

Each Term Stage2 provides an evening Masterclass, often by leading Industry Professionals on a specific skill that is relevant to the Term and levels of interest in the group. We’ve previously held a Q&A with TV Actor Lauren Crace (Eastenders, Mr Selfridge etc.), Character Building Workshops with our Patron, Playwright Claire Dowie, as well as many others from Stage Combat to Puppetry.

Attitude & Professionalism

Getting involved in Stage2 teaches young people to have a positive attitude, a sense of pride and self-esteem, and achieve their maximum potential  in everything they do.

Stage2 is proud to be one of England’s only Youth Theatre’s with a designated Mentoring & Befriending Scheme – this scheme, run entirely by Members of Stage2, allows young people to feel safe and secure whilst here. The team is normally made up of around 5-10 members (including a range of ages and abilities) who have chosen (through interview) to spend one full academic year ensuring that Stage2’s most important rule; Nobody is ever left out, is fully upheld!

Stage2 offers 1-on-1 LAMDA tuition in Acting, Choral Speaking, Musical Theatre, Mime, Verse & Prose and Devising. We are proud to claim a 100% pass rate with all students and our tuition is widely regarded as the best in the world (or so LAMDA have told us!).

The tuition is carried out in the week and follows a 10 lesson structure, including a public showcase and an exam.

For prices and more information drop us an enquiry or check out the LAMDA Qualifications website for a further insight into the work and qualifications we can provide!

Higher Education

Stage2 has a string of successful Alumni that we have personally helped on their pathway into further education.

In the Autumn Term (when students are turning their attention towards UCAS) we hold a Meeting to discuss options, plans, the difference between courses and then an opportunity to ask questions. All Staff at Stage2 are well versed in the proceedings of Higher Education and will help in Audition Prep and Provisional Statement writing.

For further information drop us an Enquiry!

Inclusion & Open Access

We are an open-access group with skilled staff to support any young person, regardless of background or ability. We are the only youth theatre with a designated Mentoring Scheme, as well as a Subsidy Fund to support financially challenged families.
