Information: Every theatrical performance that you see has a backstage team, people committed to making sure that the show runs as smoothly as possible. Lighting operators, sound operators, stage managers, costume, front of house, as you can imagine it’s a pretty big team of people. Just like these shows, all of Stage2’s performances have a technical team, thought the public are surprised when they find out that our team is actually made up entirely of Stage2 members. You can be part of this team! Anyone at all can interview for these roles (the technical roles for that term’s show are announced at each intro day). You don’t even need to have had any past experience to be considered, we appreciate that everyone has to start somewhere and therefore we make our selection as fair as fair can be. The technical team are expected to work hard and to be completely committed to the show and of course their roles. We take this opportunity very seriously and do expect people to work hard and to communicate well with the rest of the team. In February 2010 we won the Arcadian Trophy for Technical Achievement for our production of “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” which illustrates just what our teams are capable of.

During the term, you will take on tasks appropriate to your role and do them to the best of your ability. Then taking everything you have learnt and all the information you need, you then get to apply it all by working in a theatre for the show that you have been working so hard on. Help is always available and we encourage you to ask as many questions as you like to ensure that you are ok at all times.

As you can see it is a fantastic opportunity for anyone who wants to work backstage in the industry as a career or even for people who are just interested in how the technical team runs.

It is a fantastic opportunity to learn so much about the backstage are of a theatre, the individual roles and what exactly is involved. So if you are interested in being part of such a dynamic and successful team, come along to our interviews on the intro day (after enrolling at Stage2). I look forward to seeing you!

Want to hear from a past technical team member, below is a case study from our youngest ever sound operator.

I've been in Stage2 for three terms and now I'm 12 but joined when I was 11, I'm also quite confident I'm quite confident with people at Stage2 but at school I'm not as confident. I have three brothers who all did Stage2; Ben, Josh and Sam. Ben and Josh are interested in technical and my brother Sam is a drama queen. I do technical to like be Ben and Josh.

I got into to the technical course in my first term, which my brother josh did who also does technical. In that technical course I did all backstage roles like stage management lighting and sound. At the end of that term we did sharings which are like a mini show. We did a film saying what stage 2 was for us.

In my second term at stage 2 I did sound for lord of the flies, which was great and fun. In the term its also great fun you get to know different people get to know the other technical people so in this show I got to know the lighting and stage managers. I also did a clean show which is where I made no mistakes while in front of an audience.

In my third term (this term) I am in Spoonface Steinberg by lee hall (which is about a girl fighting cancer) I'm also doing sound which already is great and we haven't got to production week (which is the week the week the show is in). Production week is very fun and when the first night of the show comes its very and gets nervous. But when u see the audience and see lots of your friends and family your nerves go away.

Next term I will be in midsummer nights dream which I will be in the main cast of a fairy. And with out stage 2 I would not have got the confident to audition for it I'm glad I did.

If your thinking about technical training you should join stage 2 since its fun you make loads of friends on the way and you learn a lot.
