Permanent Way 2009

Wednesday 22nd - Saturday 25th July 2009

The Crescent Theatre, Birmingham

"The youngsters - there are nearly 70 of them - achieve the smooth, professional result that always sits so comfortably on their teen and pre-teen shoulders...

The play is largely a succession of immaculate monologues which grip without being exciting...But everything, including the backstage crew, runs with smoothness of a well-oiled locomotive" Birmingham Mail

David Hare’s political commentary on the privatisation of the railways does not make for the kind of material most youth theatres would be comfortable performing, but Stage2’s cast rose to the challenge, creating a funny, tragic and compelling tale for the audience. This production saw many members in their first lead roles with Stage2 - “The standard is set early by Rhianna Frost with her cut glass, beautifully enunciated account of aTtreasury Official and is maintained throughout.’ All aspects were expertly executed, including the many technical areas which included large moving platforms and pieces of animated film designed by our very own Alex Butler! As the National Operatic and Dramatic Association commented, "Congratulations to all those involved, both front and backstage. You can be justly proud of this production."

This latest Stage2 offering can only be described as a remarkable piece by a remarkable cast. (Spoonface Steinberg 2002)
