I had taken an interest in Drama predominantly through school lessons, but
also the numerous shows I saw as a younger kid. By complete coincidence, my
family and I were looking through a Birmingham Arts Leaflet for Winter 2009
and stumbled across Stage2’s ‘Twelfth Night’; we came along to the show and
hugely enjoyed ourselves. Initially, however, I wasn’t sure how I could cope with the fantastic standards in the performance I had witnessed, so I
decided not to join the company ‘just yet’. Then I came to see the next
production of ‘Under Milk Wood’ and couldn’t resist any longer!! I sent in a booking form right away and experienced my first day in the company the
following weekend: I immediately signed up for the chorus of ‘Shakers’ that
very first day, and I never looked back! ‘Shakers’ got standing ovations
every night: the buzz I felt when coming off stage after the curtain call,
even as only a background member of the production, was incredible. It was
amazing to look back and see, over the entire term, how the production had
taken shape around us, and then had all come together to such an eye-popping reception. I auditioned for the following term’s productions and was lucky enough to be granted a cast role in ‘James and the Giant Peach’. I can’t wait for the ‘James’ production week, hopefully this casting is the first of many such opportunities within the company. Already my experiences with Stage2 have doubled, or maybe even tripled my self-confidence and self-esteem levels: my Drama teachers at school have commented on how much I have evolved as a person, and as a performer, since joining the company. In the future I hope to undertake LAMDA examinations and join the committees: I might even apply to be a Mentor in the future.
I love Stage2 because it grants real performing opportunities to people like me who otherwise would never have had the chance of, or motivation to,
experience something like a production. It opens numerous pathways and
opportunities: both socially and in terms of a future career. But above all: it’s an honour and a privilege to be a part of the fantastic Stage2 family. |
