I had always been interested in drama as a child and had been in a few youth theatres before but I wanted to focus on singing and that clashed with my youth theatre; so I gave acting up. A few years later my mum heard about Stage2 from a parent of someone at my school and since it allowed me to take both my commitments seriously as Stage2 then was on a Sunday and I have been there ever since. Stage2 has been such a significant part of my life. It has been one of the only constants through puberty in a world where everything from friends to work load was changing on a weekly basis. It gave me a secure grounding to build on and the fact that I wasn’t naturally gifted in acting was irrelevant – everyone had been in a similar experience so there was no pressure to be a stunning actor as soon as you walked through the door. All that was asked of you was to be kind, friendly, committed (at whatever level you wanted to be) and bring a pen and paper. That’s what I love most about Stage2 the fact that we truly have an equal opportunities policy and most importantly that we have a mentoring ethos commented on by the Mentor and Befriending Foundation. We are the first youth theatre to have a Mentor and Befriending approved Mentor Scheme (of which I am the leader). It has been a constant development for me during my time at Stage2 but finally I can give something back to the company that has given so much to me. |
